01

Choose the right structure

Foreign companies usually work in Laos through a registered local company, a joint venture or a local partner. The right choice depends on your sector, licences and how much control you need.

02

Register and license

Enterprise registration is handled by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and many sectors need extra licences, for example construction, medical products, mining and energy.

03

Import and customs

Goods enter through road border crossings, the Lao-China Railway, the Mekong and Wattay International Airport. Plan HS codes, permits and certificates before shipping.

04

Sell to government and NGOs

Public and donor-funded buyers use tenders. A local partner that can prepare full tender documents, certificates and after-sales plans makes a large difference.

05

Banking and payments

Business accounts are opened with Lao commercial banks. Local payment platforms such as BCEL One are widely used by consumers.

06

Build long-term relationships

Trust and face-to-face meetings matter in Laos. Visit, meet partners and authorities, and commit to after-sales service.
